#5 Why It Sucks To Be Human
Heya,
It’s almost 12am and I’d completely forgotten about today’s newsletter. So it’s going to be a short one. I was filming a video today and in researching for it, I got reminded of a really cool concept.
That humans are the only creatures that can hate themselves.
Friedrich Nietzsche talks about this in the Geneaology of Morals, one of my favourite philosophical essays. Although he elaborates on this a lot more (I have a summary of the book here), I find that realisation alone to have me thinking.
I wonder why and how it’s so hard for us to accept ourselves.
Animals don’t hate their bodies. They don’t hate their predatory nature. They don’t hate their feathers or their skin.
It would’ve probably been endlessly easier to be anything else. Why does self-love come so hard to humans?
Apologies for the weird prompt - but I wonder if realising this helps you too?
Hope you have an amazing week,
Liz
